Exchange also attempts to apply the principle of shadow redundancy to incoming messages even if they originate on servers that don t support the feature. In this case, Exchange accepts the message, attempts to deliver it onward, and makes a shadow copy. However, Exchange delays sending an acknowledgment to the originating server until the message has been delivered to all hops within the organization. In an organization that has a complex routing topology or in situations where some connections are not immediately available, it might take some time before a message is delivered to all hops. You do not want the SMTP connection with the other mail server to time out, because this would cause it to resend the message. To get around the problem, Exchange sets a value for the maximum time (in seconds) that it will wait for the message to be processed. The default value is 30 seconds and can be changed by setting the MaxAcknowledgementDelay property on receive connectors. If the time delay elapses, Exchange issues an acknowledgment to the originating server. It is possible that this system could result in some messages being lost if a hub transport server fails and loses its transport database. However, in practical terms the risk is not high.

During a migration project, you will have to decide how to connect Exchange 2010 servers to the existing routing infrastructure. The detail of how to connect Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 is well documented in TechNet and other books and hasn t changed significantly from the situation for Exchange 2007. In brief, the hidden routing group into which Exchange 2010 servers are installed is exposed to Exchange 2003 servers through a routing group connector that links the SMTP-based messaging topology used by Exchange 2010 and Exchange 2007 and the X.400 message transfer agent (MTA)-based approach taken by earlier versions.
